Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran’s attack on his country “failed” as it was “thwarted” by Israel’s air defence system.
Iran has launched almost 200 ballistic missiles into Israel in a major escalation of the Middle East conflict.
Sirens were heard across the country as residents headed for bomb shelters.
Israel’s Iron Dome defence system was able to intercept most missiles; however, some were able to get through and land near Tel Aviv.
“This evening, Iran, once again, launched an attack on Israel, but the attack failed,” Mr Netanyahu said.
“It was thwarted thanks to Israel’s air defence system, which is the most advanced in the world, and I would like to congratulate the IDF for this impressive achievement.”
