The Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox finish off a 4 game series tonight in Los Angeles. First pitch is at 9:38 PM ET. The Red Sox have won the first 3 games so far and are looking for a road sweep. The Angels are (-120) with a total of 8 runs.
These two teams are headed in totally opposite directions. The Angels have lost a franchise record 14 games in a row. They just cannot win a game. This losing streak started all the way back on May 25th. They have scored just 40 runs over this 14 game losing streak. That is 2.9 runs per game. The offense has been held to 0 runs three times over that span. Against Boston alone, they have scored just 5 runs over the last 3 games. This Angels offense is in a crazy funk right now and it may keep spiraling downward. Mike Trout injured his groin in this series and is listed as day to day. He missed last night’s game and is questionable for tonight. Anthony Rendon has been out with a wrist injury and will be out for at least another week. Taylor Ward, who is batting .333 is on the injured list as well with a hamstring injury. This Angels team is plagued with injuries and will struggle to score runs for the foreseeable future.
The Red Sox come in having won 7 straight games including 3 against the Angels. They are hot and are looking for a big road sweep before heading to Seattle tomorrow. Both the offense and the pitching is on fire. They rank 7th in the MLB in runs scored per game and 1st in the MLB in hits per game. The pitching staff ranks 8th in runs allowed and 7th in hits allowed.
Nick Pivetta will get the start tonight. He has been outstanding. Over his last 6 starts he has thrown 41 innings and has only allowed 6 runs. He has been one of the best pitchers in the AL over that span. He now faces a weak Angels lineup tonight where he will look to continue his dominance.
The Angels are favorited for one reason tonight. Shohei Ohtani is pitching. A team that has lost 14 games in a row should not be favored, but they are. Ohtani is a special talent, but when you dive into the numbers he hasn’t been that sharp. He is 3-4 with a 3.99 ERA this season. In his last start he went just 3 innings and gave up 8 hits and 4 runs to the Yankees. This Red Sox lineup is as dangerous as the Yankees. I don’t think Ohtani will be that much of a factor tonight.
The Angels are 15-16 SU at home this season. They have lost 8 straight at home. They are also 3-9 SU in their last 12 at home against the Red Sox. Boston has one of their aces on the mound and have been playing way too good to not take them as underdogs tonight. They are a decent 12-14 SU when playing as a dog. They are also 17-13 SU on the road. Expect Pivetta to throw a gem and the bats to get to Ohtani. Take the Red Sox (+105).
