Have you ever the weirdest buddy system story you have? During Army basic training, I got paired with Martinez for everything - chow, PT, cleaning duties, the works. The problem was Martinez had this weird condition where he couldn't stop hiccupping whenever he got nervous. Not just regular hiccups, but these loud, violent ones that sounded like a dying walrus. Our drill sergeant thought he was being disrespectful and kept making him do pushups, which only made the hiccups worse. I spent three weeks walking around with a guy who sounded like he was having seizures every five minutes. The other recruits started avoiding us because Martinez's hiccups were so distracting during lectures and training exercises.
The hiccupping got so bad that other soldiers started placing bets on how long Martinez's episodes would last. During weapons training, he'd hiccup so hard the rifle would bounce in his hands. In the mess hall, he'd hiccup and spray food everywhere, making everyone around us relocate. I tried everything to help him - holding his breath, drinking water upside down, even scaring him randomly throughout the day. Nothing worked. The drill sergeants started calling us "the hiccup twins" because I was always there trying to cure him. One sergeant suggested we try ancient remedies like standing on our heads or eating sugar cubes, but Martinez just hiccupped while upside down, which looked even more ridiculous.
Things reached peak absurdity during a surprise inspection. The commanding officer was walking through our barracks when Martinez started one of his legendary hiccup attacks. The CO stopped dead in his tracks and asked "What is that sound, soldier?" Martinez tried to stand at attention but kept convulsing with each hiccup. "HIC! Sir, this recruit HIC! has a medical HIC! condition, sir! HIC!" The CO looked confused and asked if he was having a medical emergency. I had to explain that my buddy just hiccupped uncontrollably when stressed, which was basically all the time in basic training. The CO had never encountered anything like this in twenty years of service.
The CO decided to observe Martinez for a few minutes to understand the situation. What followed was the most uncomfortable five minutes of my military career. Martinez was trying so hard not to hiccup that his face turned purple, but the hiccups just got louder and more violent. The CO watched this grown man convulsing like a broken machine while I stood there helplessly. Other recruits were peeking around corners to watch the spectacle. Finally, the CO asked "Son, have you tried drinking pickle juice?" Martinez said no, so the CO marched us to the mess hall and made him chug an entire jar of pickle juice. The mess hall staff watched in amazement as the commanding officer personally supervised this bizarre medical intervention.
The pickle juice worked instantly. Martinez's hiccups stopped for the first time in three weeks. The CO looked proud of himself and said "My grandmother's cure never fails." Martinez was so relieved he started thanking the CO profusely, but then his face went green and he projectile vomited pickle juice all over the CO's boots. The silence was deafening. Every person in the mess hall froze as pickle juice dripped off the commanding officer's spit-shined boots. The CO looked down at his pickle-soaked boots, then at Martinez, then at me. "Well," he said calmly, "at least he's not hiccupping anymore." Martinez spent the rest of basic training on permanent kitchen duty as punishment, but he never hiccupped again after that day. He also couldn't eat pickles for the rest of his life without gagging. The story became base legend, and new recruits still get told about the great pickle juice incident of 2019.
