The Indian railways manages 8.5 billion passengers every year, with a peak booking rate of 28,000 transactions per minute.

With over 2 Trillion dollars on the line, the railways uses a distributed online transaction processing system called CRIS, that shards incoming requests into data centers. A backup data center in Secunderabad offers fault tolerance.
