Saudi Arabia has officially ended the decades-old Kafala, or sponsorship, system that governed the lives of millions of migrant workers. The system, introduced in the 1950s, tied foreign employees to local employers who controlled their visas, jobs, and movement. Under the new contract-based model, workers can now change jobs, travel abroad, and file complaints without their employer’s approval. The reform, part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 plan, reportedly affects over 13 million migrants, representing 42% of the population, including 2.5 million Indians. Experts say the change is historic, though its success will depend on effective implementation.
