Jupiter and Saturn are the two planets with the largest moon systems in the Solar System, and they have been competing for the “most moons” title for years.

Jupiter is famous for its massive gravity, which allows it to capture and hold many natural satellites. Its moons range from tiny, irregular rocks to large and complex worlds like Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These four Galilean moons alone make Jupiter feel like a mini solar system.

Between 2011 and 2017, Jupiter was officially recorded as having 67 moons. At that time, this number made Jupiter the planet with the most known moons in the Solar System. Many of these moons were small and newly discovered, showing how advanced telescope technology was expanding our understanding of Jupiter’s surroundings.

Saturn, on the other hand, is surrounded by an even larger collection of moons, many of which orbit within or near its iconic ring system. Thanks to continuous discoveries of small, irregular moons, Saturn eventually surpassed Jupiter and became the planet with the highest number of known moons.
