Friction-Based Landing Gear Lets Drones Safely Land on Fast-Moving Vehicles

Landing is one of the hardest challenges for drones, with nearly half of drone accidents happening during touchdown. To solve this, researchers from the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, have developed a new system that allows drones to land safely even on vehicles moving at up to 68 miles per hour.

Their experimental quadcopter, called DART (Direct Approach Rapid Touchdown), uses two key technologies — Friction Shock Absorbers (FSAs) and Reverse Thrust (RVT). During landing, DART descends rapidly to reduce wind drag, then levels itself before touching down. The FSAs absorb the impact’s kinetic energy, preventing the drone from bouncing or flipping, while RVT pushes it firmly onto the vehicle for a stable hold.

In tests, DART successfully completed 38 consecutive landings on a speeding pickup truck. Researchers found this system expanded the drone’s safe landing range by 38 times compared to standard gear.

This breakthrough could revolutionize drone use in emergency response, logistics, and surveillance, allowing drones to land on moving trucks, ships, or rescue vehicles. It marks a major step toward safer, more autonomous drone operations — and a future where drones can land anywhere, anytime.
