New research from the University of Michigan found that there is a measurable rise in violent and impulsive crime on game days.
Researchers from the University of Michigan and Rice University analyzed crime data from 2017 to 2021. They found that states with legal betting saw significant increases in assault, break-ins and car thefts during and immediately after big games.
Crime rose the most when the game outcome was unexpected.
Michigan legalized both in-person and online betting years ago.
Hua Gong, assistant professor of Sport Analytics at Rice University, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the study.
