Tying a ship’s mooring rope to the dock is actually one of the most dangerous parts of the docking process. If the crew slips up even a little, their hand could get crushed between the bollard and the rope.
But that’s not the only risk, mooring ropes hold an enormous amount of tension from the ship. If the rope is worn out, it can snap and whip back with crazy speed, almost like a cannonball. The force is so strong it can slice a test dummy in half. That’s why companies are competing to find safer solutions. One of them is an automatic mooring system that uses vacuum technology. This system doesn’t rely on ropes anymore. instead, it uses strong suction devices to grip the side of the ship, and it’s said to reduce the risk of accidents by up to 90%.
